Authorised calculator

Can I use a calculator, and if so, which one?

An on-screen scientific calculator will be available for you to use during your exam. If you prefer to use a physical calculator, you should bring your own calculator with you to the exam. The authorised calculator for all the CAA exams is the Texas Instruments TI-30 Multiview (with or without a suffix).

If you do bring your own TI-30 calculator, it will be checked by exam centre staff, and the memory must be cleared. You need to use the authorised calculator for all of your CAA exams. No other type of calculator will be allowed.

The TI-30 Multiview calculator is available to buy from shops or online retailers.

Mathematical and statistical resources

How will I know what formulae and tables to study?

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) book Formulae and Tables for Examinations is designed for use by exam candidates. The book gives you formulae for selected mathematical and statistical methods, calculus, time series and economic models, and many other topics.

There are also tables for compound interest calculations, selected statistical distributions and other actuarial calculations. You should make yourself familiar with these formulae and tables during your exam preparation. You can buy a copy of the book from the IFoA eShop.

You will not be able to use your own copy of the book during your exams, but a PDF copy will be available on your exam screen for you to use.
